The First Maharishi Vastu
Six years ago Maharishi University of Management in Fairfield, Iowa wanted to be able to bring the Vedic organic produce they were growing in their greenhouses closer to the population center on campus. They were thinking something simple and seasonal that could be easily put in a convenient location. …Doug Greenfield was heading up our Maharishi Vastu consultation services at the time and had spearheaded the building of over 30 Maharishi Vastu homes close to campus. He felt it was important that any building the university constructed, no matter how small and simple, honor Maharishi’s revival of this ancient knowledge of Vastu. So, he took the project on and worked closely with a Maharishi Vastu consultant to make an 1,800 SF design that would create a market to accommodate all the needs of a small grocery store.
They even added a second floor as “bonus space” which proved to be a wise decision. This area became the market café, which provides lunch and dinner for the many participants in the ongoing group meditation programs on campus.
The building is unique among retail buildings for its natural lighting. While most retail spaces, especially grocery and supermarkets, are devoid of anything but artificial light, this building has ample natural light and air circulation. The interior also boasts 100% natural wood finishes on the walls and shelving and almost all of the building materials are natural.
The market has served its purpose with great success and by last year it was overflowing its boundaries. The store manager knew a larger space would mean an expansion of revenues to the university and an ability to accommodate everyone’s desires for a wider range of items as well as more seating in the café area.
This time Doug went to the international Maharishi Vastu office and they helped him create an expansion design that gave the market an additional 2,000 SF and doubled the retail space on the first floor. The wonderful, fresh produce now has its own room and many more bulk items have been added.
Throughout both phases of construction the building process went effortlessly and came in below original cost estimates. Doug commented that it felt on all levels, “Natural law was supporting at every step,” and said this is the most economical building he has built in the last 10 years …”We favored Vastu right from the beginning.” Going through the expansion construction phase, Doug noted that his personal finances improved 200%, but more importantly, it was a fun building to build. He and the builder paid very close attention to the details of Vedic dimensioning, using the surveyor to check and verify at each key point in the process. The builder insisted that the framing drawing be checked even before he began to erect the outer wall frame.
Now the market is serving the campus community and well beyond bringing the power of Maharishi Vastu to Fairfielders even while shopping!

Outer buildings include a two-car garage with storage, and a log guest house of 250 SF nestled in the woods with its own bathroom and efficiency kitchen.
